The Carson W. Skinner Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Carson W. Skinner. Carson was a man of humble beginnings who valued God, his family and education. A native of Barbados, Carson relocated to the United States in search of new opportunities, eventually laying roots down in St. Petersburg, Florida. Upon transitioning to St. Petersburg, Carson worked for Florida Power Corporation (now Duke Energy) for 29 years and served as the Assistant Pastor at Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ for 49 years.

In 1962, Carson started his life with Mattie Wright, and they would go on to be married for 51 years and raise 6 beautiful children together. Carson’s family was the most important thing to him, and he made sure to instill education in his children and encouraged them to go as far as they could to better themselves. Carson’s emphasis on the importance of education resonated with his children and grandchildren, whom have all gone to achieve advanced degrees. Carson lived his life to the fullest, providing for his family and serving his community, leaving an impactful memory and legacy behind.

The purpose of the Carson W. Skinner Memorial Scholarship is to award financial support to the higher education goals of African-American adolescents. This scholarship honors Carson’s emphasis on education, while supporting, uplifting and setting up our African-American adolescents for success as they pursue their education.

This scholarship program is administrated by The Skinner Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on combating the disparities in adolescent health & wellness through education and mentoring services for youth in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan & Tampa Bay areas.
